Adriana Lima is one of my favourite supermodels. Her bone structure & skin complexion is amazing. I also like the fact that she isn’t too skinny and rocks a healthy body. In a wave of size zero models, Adriana is refreshing. I just came across her February 2012 Vogue Brazil cover shoot and thought she looked sensational. Here are the images.

All Aboard "Air Chanel"

I just had to share this. Chanel’s in-house genius has just put on yet another elaborate fashion show. The Grand Palais in Paris was today transformed into an airplane for the Chanel Haute Couture show. Over the years, creative director Karl Lagerfeld has built an unrivalled reputation for hosting lavish shows and this one was no exception. Emergency exits, a bar trolley and a cockpit was all thrown in for this production to make fashion spectators feel they were all aboard “Air Chanel”.

The Spring/Summer 2012 line featured longer hemlines than usual, with shades of blue and monochrome dominating the collection. The pretty designs were all about sequins, jewelled tights and rouche detailing. Hair was contrasted with a punk look and heavy eye liner.

The Tea Room - Harrods

Last weekend my friends and I went to Harrods and stumbled across The Tea Room on the 2nd floor. My friends know I have a penchant for tea and fancy things so we went inside to sample the menu. We were dehydrated walking around Harrods so we started off with lemonades. The waitress brought us Victorian lemonade. This is different from the other lemonades as the taste is very bitter. You can taste the ginger in it and the after-taste is quite strong. Being that, one of my friend’s looked like she went a shade of green (lol – bless) but given my fondness of ginger tea, wheatgrass juice and green tea – I quite enjoyed the taste. We then ordered teas, between us we ordered the Early Grey, English Breakfast (there’s always one) and the Mayfair Afternoon Tea which has a more aromatic scent. The dessert list is quite varied but being girls, three of us ordered the same apple crumble with custard and one ordered the Belgravia with a choice of 5 small fancies. The service was ok. It was a very busy Saturday afternoon and every table was occupied.

Don’t make the mistake of comparing this to afternoon tea at the Ritz or Fortnum and Mason. This is a glorified café in Harrods with some pretty cakes. Consequently, the prices are reasonable!

The Red Sole goes Bollywood - Louboutin S/S 2012

It’s not a secret, I love Christian Louboutin. I am literally on “Louboutin watch” every season as I look forward to see what the new collection brings.

I was very excited about the new collection as I heard it was being inspired by Bollywood. Following on from Chanel’s brilliant Arterlier show in Paris showcasing Indian couture, I eagerly anticipated what my favourite shoe designer would show me.

Bollywood fashion is synonymous with colour, sequins & opulence. Louboutin has captured this essence through its new shoe collection. Here are the shoes.

I actually like the pink embroidered shoe. I don’t necessarily see myself trading my Very Prive heels in for these but I like that the shoe is pushing the envelope. Agreed, they are not a classic but Louboutin doesn’t focus on only designing his patent nude/black pumps. He’s known for creating edgy talk-about pieces and on that basis, he has succeeded.

But on that note, I really don’t like the gold and black pair. The thick heel turns me off.

The fact remains whether you love them or hate them, you can’t help but look.

Nicki Minaj is the latest celeb to be partnering with OPI to launch her own nail polish collection! She has designed 6 bright colours to bring colour and glitter to your perfectly manicured fingertips. The collection is set to be launched this month!

The range has 6 limited edition shades showcasing 6 of her favourite colours. Staying true to OPI she has given the shades names reminiscent of her album and singles.
Nicki is wearing Metallic For Life from her own range in the promo image. I personally like Pink Friday and would wear it with the Super Bass purple shatter effect. The polishes can be ordered on line and OPI deliver to the UK. Asos are also stocking OPI so keep an eye out for these.

Kardashian Kolours for OPI

Nicole by OPI and the Kardashian/Jenner family announced the launch of Kardashian Kolors in 2011, 14 new nail lacquer shades inspired by Kris Jenner and her five daughters—Kourtney, Kim, Khloe Kardashian and Kylie and Kendall Jenner. There has been buzz about this since last year in the U.S and finally the collection is available to buy here in the U.K. The collection hit the shelves a few weeks ago (I spotted them at Westfield).

Keeping true to the OPI style, all the names of the polishes are cute and quirky. I love nail colours and OPI is a brand I often go for at the salon. Some of the colours (sorry Kolours) are very pretty so have a look. My favourites are Kim-pletely In Love (light natural pink) and Follow Me on Glitter (glittery grey). The shops were flowing with glitter varnishes this season and they don't appear to be going away any time soon so get yours while stocks lasts.

Versace for H&M - Spring 2012

On the 18th January Versace’s final fashion offering lands at H&M. Dresses, sleepwear and accessories in the season's coolest candy colours in the women swear range, sit alongside menswear adorned with the brand's famous Greek key motif.

The autumn/winter 2011-12 Versace for H&M collection draws its inspiration from classic Versace motifs, such as the gold buttons and colourful prints.

The Cruise Collection looks a lot more casual than the previous range and I am loving the long line printed vest. But the best thing about this collection is that it is only available in UK and Europe (unlike the collection launched In November last year which was sold internationally).

The collection is only available online so mark your calendars and get ready to click! :)

Happy New Year!

I hope you all had a lovely time with your families and friends over the holiday period. I definitely over-ate so I am looking forward to getting back into shape this month.

At the beginning of each New Year, I pick a few things I want to accomplish or work on throughout the year. Below are my New Year’s resolutions for 2012:

1.To complete a body detox every 3 months.

2.Make an effort to plan a dinner with my friends at least once a month.

3.Organise my closet once a month.

#GWishlist: Jewel Lily Mulberry Clutch

Every now and then something will catch my eye and go straight onto my #GWishlist. I told myself that I have worked really hard this year and decided to treat myself to a new handbag (being a shoe addict and really finding no excuse to buy another pair of Louboutins) I convinced myself that a handbag was a necessity and so much more practical (!). That was until I saw the “Jewelled Lily” Mulberry clutch bag. It is stunning. Not very practical. But stunning! The clutch was introduced in Mulberry’s SS/2011 collection for a limited time only. But I think it would work perfectly in the festive season with a little black dress!

The clutch is handcrafted with 2596 individual swarovski crystals. Each Lily is completely exclusive. Because of the handwork on it, no two bags are ever the same. Hello. Love it even more! It has a heavily embellished front panel encrusted with rivets; 460 rivets per bag, with four different sizes of Swarovski crystals. It also comes with the signature Postman's lock closure. It is available in camel suede.

But before you get carried away and head down to Mulberry, it retails at an eye-watering £3,575. It remains on my wish list and I have fully accepted that, that is exactly where it will remain.

Ballerina Buns

Ballerina buns were all over the runway this year. There are so many variations of the ballerina bun. You can wear it messy, low or high. Personally, for going out I prefer wearing it really high and with all fly-away hairs sprayed down. I like to look polished and glossy and this look makes it happen. For relaxed dinners and parties, I like a messy bun. I tease the hair with a tail comb and gently spray down.

It is really simple to emulate. I find it works best on hair that has been washed a day ago.
Here is a step by step guide to how I put my hair up:

Step 1: Brush your hair and pull it into a high pony tail wrapping it around an elastic band. Pull the pony tail so it is nice and tight.

Step 2: Brush the ends of the pony tail and then wrap it around the base of the elastic band. Try not to wrap it too tight as it will lose the shape.

Step 3: Secure the bun with bobby pins around the head.

Step 4: Spray the hair with shine spray and and tame any fly-aways.

I like to team this look with lots of highlighter on my cheek bones. You can’t hide with this look so make sure you apply a nice bright lip colour. This really is a great look for going out. I will be wearing my hair like this over a few parties over the festive season. Think of all the time you'll save on blow dries!

A Private Viewing of Mani Kohlis' 2012 Khubsoorat Saree Collection

Last night I attended a private viewing of Mani Kohli’s Khubsoorat Saree collection. The doors to her store opened for a private evening with canapés and drinks, showcasing the hottest trends in sarees. Models came out in 6 modern contemporary statement pieces Mani designed, that she feels should be worn by women today. The evening was beautifully put together with the main lady herself draped in a gorgeous red ensemble and jewellery. The sarees she showcased were very much in line with the ethos of her designs which personally for me, couples vibrant colour and stone work very well. My favourite piece on the night was an elegant red, black and white saree with stunning sequin work.

Mani has a very special place in my heart as she was the first fashion designer I shot for. It was only my second shoot and it was her clothes and demeanour that made me want to be in this business a long time. She was so encouraging and complimentary. She also is a complete professional and takes time to speak to her clients and understand their couture needs. This is testament to why she has been around for so long!

The event overall was elegant with many established faces from Green Street turning up to support Mani. I was particularly overwhelmed to reunite with Neelam from Neelam Beauty. Neelam is actually the reason why I started modelling. She was the lady who scouted me when I was 15 years old and asked me to appear in her beauty campaign for the original Asian Woman magazine in Bow. Attending the night were also the lovely Kyles Jewellery owners, Nisha and Malkit Dadi. Kyles is next door to Khubsoorat and they have a long-standing relationship with Mani as well. I know Nisha personally and have modelled for Kyles Jewellery many times. They also created bespoke sets for me and my family. It is always lovely meeting up with Nisha and even after all these years in the business she continues to possess a very personable manner when you meet her. Personally for me, attending last night was a humbling experience. I met so many people who were there for me when I started modelling in the late 90’s and it was amazing to see how much these individuals and businesses had grown.

American actress (and wife of crooner Robin Thicke) Paula Patton appears on the cover of the fashion magazine Harper’s Bazaar Arabia for the December 2011 issue. The actress stars in the upcoming Mission Impossible:Ghost Protocol. On the cover, Paula wears a gorgeous abaya designed by Abu Dhabi-based label Mauzan.

Chanel - The Metier D’Art show 2011/2012- Paris Meets India

As a massive Lagerfeld fan I find it hard to criticize anything he designs and this showcase is no exception! Displaying deeply extravagant textures and embellishments, Chanel held its Paris-Bombay Metier D’Art Show today in Paris. The Metier D’Art show is an annual event that Chanel puts on to promote the intricate and exceptional work of artisans, embroiders and gold smiths – all which play an important role in couture design.

Lagerfeld displayed beautiful rhinestone-studded dress coats shaped like salwar kameezes, long sari-styled dresses and flowing Rajasthani silk skirts. The trademark Chanel cropped tweed jackets were paired with thigh-high leather boots emulating the churidar pyjama style. I really like the tailored cream jacket which looks very similar to a sherwani, made to look feminine with dripping jewels.

Knee-length silk skirts also had the fancy draping of a sari and the evening gowns were fitted with sweeping lengths of fabric the models draped over their heads. Keeping the colour palette mostly muted with pretty golds, silvers and creams the embellishments and accessories really pulled the looks together. I honestly believe accessories and styling are just as important as the clothes in a fashion show. I very clearly remember wearing designs for a top Pakistani designer and the way she draped the outfit on me for the runway was sensational. A gorgeous outfit with little or no styling can look lack-lustre and doesn’t do the outfit justice.

This show being Chanel and clearly with no budgetary constraint, really pushed out the boat with accessories! All the models appeared adorned in jewels. From chokers, chandelier earrings, gold anklets and beautiful pearls and chains, they were all seen. My favourite is the striking image of the model wearing a nose-piece in her hair. The make up was kept somewhat “Indian” with natutal blush, eyes lined heavily with kohl and nude lips. Hair was swept up high and rightly so – showing the neck and shoulder detail on the jackets.

The show itself was reminiscent of a royal banquet with models walking past guests as they sat on straight tables running along the sides. The press pictures from the night look sensational and the white and silver back drop of the show lends to compliment the collection really well.

There are so many images but I have picked the looks I loved the most. The collection will be available to purchase in Chanel around May 2012 in Paris.

Cheryl Cole's Shoe Line for Stylist Pick

After much anticipation, Cheryl has finally launched her shoe range with stylist pick today. I first heard about this a few months ago and have been eagerly awaiting to see what she would create. I really admire Cheryl’s fashion sense (bar a couple faux pas during X factor – but hey we’ve all had some). She dresses really well and accessorises nicely. Surely it is every girl’s dream to design her own shoe line (well it is mine anyway). I am a stylist pick customer so I will be perusing her section. Here is a sneak peak of what the line looks like.

I really like the studded heels in black and the leopard print ankle boots are lovely.

Elizabeth Taylor: My Beauty Icon

Elizabeth Taylor was a beautiful, talented and glamorous icon. I look at old pictures of her and feel overwhelmed with her elegance and poise. Although much of her private life was splashed in the media, I am more concerned with her fashion choices and how she chose to represent herself. Elizabeth would always look groomed to perfection with her prominent thick eyebrows and lipstick in tact. She literally oozed old Hollywood glamour. Elizabeth became synonymous with jewellery and was often seen at events dripping in diamonds. My Mum mentioned to me recently that there will be an auction of her jewellery pieces this year and that the sets were beautiful.

I looked it up and indeed thousands of pounds worth of jewellery belonging to Elizabeth Taylor is to go on sale in Christie’s first ever online-only auction.

Internet shoppers can bid on more than 950 of the late actress’s belongings, which also include clothes, shoes, handbags and pieces of artwork. Prices range from £62 for a pair of the star’s Chanel earrings to a whopping £6,300 for a diamond and 18-carat white gold necklace with 126 circular cut diamonds.

I had a closer look at some of the pieces and they are breathtaking. I have picked some of my favourites. These are going on my (very unlikely) #GWishlist.

Vogue Paris: The Music Edition

I have just seen this month's cover for Vogue Paris and I totally love it! Kate Moss is virtually unrecognisable with a ginger mullet and no eyebrows as she channels 70's David Bowie (way before my time - lol). I appreciate the creativity and stying of this shoot. Concept shoots are the most fun to model. You are almost playing a character and that is the most challenging as a Model.

This Vogue Paris issue has been dedicated to music. I think Kate looks amazing. Even more amazing... she's 37 years old and still going strong. There's hope for all of us! Power to Kate Moss.

NARS Makeup Event at Selfridges

Hello Lovelies

Last week I went to an exclusive evening in Selfridges London for NARS cosmetics. I went along to test new cosmetics and learn the art of applying make up by leading make up artist David Scheffen (right hand man to NARS founder Francois).

David has worked with Claudia Schiffer, Elle Macpherson and lots of other celebrities. He suggested a step by step skin care system and introduced all the new fall colours. He was fabulous to watch and very personable. He made time to meet every one and give his expert advice.

We were taken to a private room at Selfridges and given our own colour palettes, brushes and skin care products to test and discuss. On the product front, I really liked the brushes. I purchased the Yachiyo blusher brush from the Kabuki Artisan Brush collection. The blusher brush is so soft and contoured perfectly for cheekbones and blending. The brush is made from goat hair (which explains the softness)! It is priced at £37.50 but I use it every day (she tells herself).

I also purchased lipstick in Schiap (£17.50) and the multiple bronzer/highlighter in Lamu (£29). The highlighter is amazing and gives just enough sparkle to sweep on top of cheekbones.

I treated my sister too and she chose the bronzer in warm golden and the volumising mascarra.

I was really impressed with the levels of pigment in the eye shadows and I am sure I will return to shop at NARS.

As an obsessed Twilight fan (embarassing I know) I went to watch the new Breaking Dawn film. The film was amazing (Team Edward) but apart from the story line I was in awe of the wedding dress Bella wore. It was breath-taking and I loved the elegance of the cut, shape and material. The long sleeves and the lace detail are beautiful. The button detailing on the back looks stunning. I absolutely LOVE the dress. I looked it up when I got home and discovered it was designed by Carolina Herrera especially for the film.

The dress has been so popular that she has created a replica for joe-public brides to purchase. Here is a picture of the imitation version x x x

International Asian Fashion Awards 2011

I attended the IAFA (International Asian Fashion Awards) in Park Lane Hilton in London on Saturday. This is an annual event organised by my friends Neeru Bhandari and Del Ghosal. I think they are doing a fabulous job in recognising Asian fashion designers and make up artists. The event was a big success with a great turn out from the industry.

I hosted the event last year but this year I went to support my good friend Kaniz Ali who had been nominated for the Best Make-Up Artist Award. I was so pleased when she won! I am so proud of what she has accomplished. We are usually each other's plus ones when we have to attend girlie events as these. We had a really good time!

My friend Saran Kohli was also a winner on the night, taking home the award for best Asian Newcomer. I have worked with Saran before and he is an amazing talented designer and humble human being. My first EVER fashion shoot was at his house when I was 15 years old. I did a fashion campaign for his Mum, the lovely Mani Kohli of Khubsoorat. Both Saran and I have grown so much over the years and it feels good to see him doing well.

Ziggi won Best Male Fashion Designer. I have also worked with him before and his designs are stunning. Another worthy winner.

Collection of the Year went to Ekta Solanki. She is a brilliant designer and incidentally dressed me last year when I was hosting the event. Her clothes are stunning!

Overall I think the event went really well and it was great to see so many faces after so long. Award ceremonies are important for the industry as I think it is about time the contribution our community makes to fashion is recognised and rewarded.

Charity Dinner to Raise Money for Orphanages

Hello lovelies

I recently met up with some friends for dinner to collect money for Bangladesh. My friend is travelling to her home town to provide clothes and medical supplies in orphanages. We raised money to the cause by donating money and buying cupcakes - proceeds of which also went to the fund. She managed to raise over £1000 on the night which goes a long way there.

I wore a full-sleeved blue sequin dress. Sequin dresses are seen everywhere at the moment. I am loving full sleeved dresses at the moment. They look really sophisticated AND keep you warm. Jackpot. I have picked one available in Topshop similar to mine and reasonably priced.

Sorry I Have Been Away...

Hello All

I know it has been a long time since I blogged and I have been getting a lot of messages about it. I am so sorry. I am working on a very exciting project at the moment in connection with International Women’s Day (IWD) next year. All I can reveal at this stage is that I am working on my next black tie fund raiser. I am working with premium designers, amazing make-up artists and some of the most revered women in the UK who are fantastic at their jobs. I am working with a brilliant PR company to put on a grand show to raise money for a heart-warming cause.

I'm an Ambassador for the Hashoo Foundation

Hello All

I was contacted by the Hashoo foundation and asked to be 1 in 7 women in the UK to be an ambassador for the charity. My role is to promote the good work being done and to encourage other women to come forward in our pledge. We are aiming to get 500 British women involved! This is a true privilege and I look forward to raising money for the charity project I am involved in.

The Hashoo Foundation is a dynamic and progressive non-profit organisation. Set up in 1988, the charity’s vision has been to help create an ethical and inclusive society in which people live with dignity and have power over their own lives.

Since its launch, Hashoo Foundation has created and funded a variety of grass-roots programmes, in Pakistan, that focus on empowering the most vulnerable members of society, be it children with special needs, the disabled, the elderly, refugees or women.

Whilst the foundation works on multiple initiatives, I am involved with the Plan Bee project. The aim of the project is to help 500 poor women in Pakistan. Plan Bee is a sincere cause that aims to equip Pakistani women with the skills necessary to learn how to become professional bee keepers with the aim of selling the honey they produce to earn respectable incomes. The project has already won the BBC World Challenge Award in 2008 for its innovative approach to women’s economic empowerment.

When I heard about this project it really warmed my heart. As a British Pakistani girl and having the luxury of a career in banking and the media, I feel very fortunate that I can earn and provide for myself. Being asked to be an ambassador for this project humbles me and makes me want to make as much of a difference as possible. The UK is known for its kindness and charitable work and I hope this continues, especially for women living in countries where economic opportunities are substantially less. This is a fabulous cause and one that I am happy to myself donate to and to encourage other successful women in the industry to come forward and help those who are less fortunate than ourselves.

I'm Officially A Red-Head

Hello

I have been toying with the idea of going red for quite some time. Over the weekend, I went to the hair salon for my usual cut but my stylist persuaded me to try the flame-haired style. So I took the plunge and went for it. This is the first time I have been anything other than brunette so it's quite a change for me. So far, I am really loving it. It compliments my skin tone really well and my hair feels healthier. I'm not sure how long I will keep it but for now I'm rocking it....

I only had it done a couple of days ago so the only picture I have is one my sister took of me in the car on the way to Westfield.

Pakistan Fashion Week 2011/2012

On the 23-25th September it was Pakistan Fashion Week. It was held in London for the very first time and top Pakistani designers participated. Pakistan is a leading manufacturer and retailer of women's fashion and I wanted to show my support for the event. You can view the collection on various sites. I am so excited to share Marc Jacobs' new collection for Louis Vuitton for 2012. I absolutely loved the etheral carousel themed show. It looked beautiful. I have a soft spot for Louis Vuitton and have been a loyal client for many years. The collection showcased monogrammed umbrellas, sparkly tiaras, alice bands and lasy like 60's inspired fashion. I thought the show was one of the prettiest put on by fashion week. Rumours in the industry suggest that Jacobs' may be moving over to Dior to replace shamed designer Galliano. If so, I can't wait to see what he produces.

Cheeky Designer Bindis

Hello Lovelies

One of my very good friends just returned home after visiting Bangladesh. She was out in the markets and popped into a store. She was shocked to see my face staring back at her on a poster (lol). She went in and found my face printed on various designer bindi packets. She very kindly brought me a pack back and I'm sharing it with you. It looks like the bindi company have scanned my image from Asiana Magazine and printed it onto the packets. It is hilarious (and very cheeky). The image is from a fashion shoot I did for Kyles Jewellers.

I find it really funny how they actually super-imposed a bindi onto my picture as I never wore one on the shoot. Lol.

This is not the first time this has happened. I get many messages from friends and people on facebook telling me how they saw my picture on a poster in a shop in Kashmir, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and India. I guess it is very flattering albeit very naughty.

With ’70s-inspired fashion fast becoming one of the hottest trends this autumn, I really like the pussy-bow blouse and dress trends this year. I have recently purchased a lot of blouses for work and team then with a pencil skirt, or wear a dress with opaque tights. It looks really elegant and tailored.

I really like this dress on Asos. It's a lovely colour. I'd wear it with cream court shoes and killer lipstick.

Oscar de la Renta - Spring 2012 Collection

It is New York Fashion week and many designers; established and new are show casing their designs for Spring 2012. Oscar de la Renta just showcased his collection and I was very excited to see what he would bring. When I think of Oscar de le Renta I imagine classic bright silk gowns with ruffles and slits. His designs are the epitome of glamour and therefore a regular on the red carpet.

I have picked my favourite looks from his collection. I LOVE lace right now so I find myself drawn to these pieces. If I think I would wear it, you’ll see it on my blog.

My Dress for London Mela - AS0S

Hey!

Us girls need ANY excuse to buy a new dress. So for London Mela 2011 last weekend I wore a printed dress by Asos. I loved the orange print and the full length sleeves.

The dress had a really cool geometric print, a round neckline, pintuck shoulders, long sleeves, gathered button fastening cuffs, a high waistband and a full gathered midi cut skirt which I find flatters most figures.

It fit really well and was so comfortable. I teamed the dress with shoe boots to toughen up the look. I loved the 70's vibe! The dress is 100% viscose which means it hugs your figure and gives a really nice seamless look.

Rose Exclusif Lipgloss - Get Pinked

I want to share a new product with you. Today I bought Rose Exclusif lipgloss by Bourjois. I heard good things about this product so picked one up. It is a clear lipgloss that self-adjusts into a personalised pink when applied to your lips.

The science part is explained by Bourjois:

“Because the pH of your lips is unique, this lipgloss enriched with pH reactive pigments will self-adjust into a bespoke pink to suit your skin tone!”

So you apply the gloss and depending on the unique PH balance of your lips a pretty pink shade surfaces. I was curious to see what colour I would get and my lips have gone a really pretty coral pink! I’m really liking it. The gloss is quite sticky and a little goes a long way so use it sparingly. The gloss contains vitamin E and C and promises to give you 8 hours of moisture. Perfect! A pretty natural colour and nourished lips! Pout away ;)

My Favourite Couture Designer: Zuhair Murad

Hi Lovelies

I wanted to share with you the new couture collection by my favourite designer. Zuhair Murad is a Beirut-based Lebanese fashion designer. His creations are regularly seen on the red carpet by celebrities such as Blake Lively, Jennifer Lopez, Kim Kardashian to name a few.

I first came across Murad’s work a couple of years ago. I was reading a catwalk report and came across a stunning gown with lace and gold embellishments. I researched the designer and located his show rooms. I was immediately fascinated by the detail in his outfits. I genuinely felt like he was designing gowns with my style in mind. His creations are perfection!

As an Asian model, I have been fortunate enough to wear some gorgeous outfits. I am always looking at details in an ensemble and the way it falls on the body. It also means that I have grown up wearing outfits with heavy work, crystals, swarovski and sequinze. This is what drew me to his designs. The thing that appeals to me about Murad’s designs is that they have a couture shape; the one shoulder, nipped in waist and corsetry but the embroidery is drawn with inspiration from his Middle Eastern roots.

I regularly research Murad’s collections. He is a breath taking designer whose couture pieces are always gorgeous. I can always spot a Murad gown and the beadwork on his dresses is sensational. I have picked my favourite from his summer 2011 and fall 2012 collection.

For Spring 2011, Murad created fairy-tale looks with glamorous sparkles I expected, but there were are also tribal and animal prints showcased. Murad was inspired by a legend, the historical Tin Hinan, a 4th century woman of prestige whose monumental tomb is located in the Sahara at Abalessa in the Ahaggar region of Algeria. The tomb was opened by a French army team in 1925. She was found buried with heavy gold and silver jewellery and adorned with pearls. On her right forearm she wore 7 silver bracelets, and on her left, 7 gold bracelets. Another silver bracelet and a gold ring were placed with the body. The legend of this Muslim tribal woman is alleged the inspiration for Murad’s 2011 designs.

For Fall 2011, Murad’s couture collection was inspired by the Chinese Empress Wu Zetian. She was renowned for her remarkable beauty whilst ruling with an iron fist. Powerful and eccentric, she kept a male harem (saucy!) and excelled in the arts. I note that once again, Murad has drawn inspiration from a woman of character. The exquisite dresses from this collection feature intricate knotting details, mandarin collars, foliage embroideries of bamboo shoots, cherry blossoms and love birds. I have picked my favourite from both collections.

I have decided to start picking my star fashion buys. I am always building wish lists on my ipad so I think it will be nice to share some of the key pieces that have caught my eye.

I was 12 years old when I first came across a Gucci bag. I had just started high school and remember seeing the iconic bags. The cotton canvas bag with the Gucci print emblazoned on it was seen almost everywhere. Several years later, with my first pay cheque I bought my mum a Gucci shoulder bag and myself a small bag pink and black bag. As I got older my label loves have evolved. I felt like every girl had a Gucci bag and I found myself pushing mine to the back of the cupboard replacing it with upmarket Chanels and less obvious Mulberry ones.

At the end of 2010, Gucci launched the 1973 range. This range completely rekindled my love for Gucci. I love the entwined double G in gold against the leather. I also have a weakness for gold chained shoulder bags so when I saw this bag it went onto my wish list.

This range is classier and elegant in a subtler way. I can't wait to get my hands on the teal leather version.

It retails at £520. It is only big enough to carry your lippy, iphone and credit cards but it is so chic and classy, which is why it is on my #GWishlist.

Brunette Beauties On The Go: Dry Shampoo

All my friends know that I spend a lot of money on my hair; treatments, products, cuts and styling. I am often looking for new products and always excited when I get to sample them.

I recently proclaimed my love for dry shampoo on twitter and got a lot of responses from girls asking about it. I have been using dry shampoo for many years now and honestly its one of my must-have products.

If like me you have long hair and after the second day of your blow dry, you find your hair isn’t greasy enough to wash and just needs a refresh – then dry shampoo is the way forward.

Like most women, I have a busy schedule with work, events and functions and I don’t always have the time to blow dry my hair to perfection. A few years ago, I heard about dry shampoo. Back then the only product I recall that could be bought was bumble & bumble’s hair powder range. It could only be bought in salons and was always out of stock online. Then in more recent years, a lot of dry shampoo products came onto market by companies such as TIGI, James Brown, Batiste, Klorane etc

I have tried nearly all of these products but my favourite is Lee Stafford’s Oily Roots. I spray the bottle into my hair and then shake out the excess. It gives volume at the roots and revitalises my locks. Perfect for days when you’re running late (which in my case are often). I even keep a travel sized bottle in my handbag. The only problem that I found with this product was that the spray was white and you had to shake out the powder otherwise it looks like you’ve dropped baby powder on your head (!) Not a good look. So I was very excited when I found out that Lee Stafford had launched new dry shampoo in two shades; medium and dark brown. I snapped up a bottle in medium brown.

It costs less than £6 which if you ask me is much better value for money than a salon blow dry.

Perfume Notes... An Introduction

Perfume has always fascinated me. It can completely transform the way I feel and evoke memories of a great holiday or a particular moment in my life.

In today's society, celebrities are constantly bombarding us with their fragrances, sometimes second or third. It intrigued me into finding out how they are constructed and what goes into creating one.

My friend bought me Carolina Herrera's 212 perfume this week for my birthday. I love perfume and don't like to leave the house without it. So it is always a pleasure when friends buy me fragrances. I have built up quite a collection!

I know 212 it has been in the market for a while but I really like this perfume. Top notes include orange blossom, bergamot and mandarin. The middle note is composed of camellia, gardenia and lilly.

Now for the science part...

Perfume is composed of 3 notes; The top note, middle and base note. The top note is the first scent you smell upon application. The middle note is the one that surfaces just before the top note decipitates. The base note brings depth and solidity to the fragrance. Essentially, the middle and base notes are the ones that stay and form the overall scent.

Personally I have found that perfumes with notes of musk and lily appeal to me the most and sit well on my skin. I like clean and floral scents. Ralph Lauren's Romance is my signature scent which also carries these notes. For the summer however, it will be all about 212.

Kerastase Elixir Beautifying Oil

This week I purchased Kerastase Beautifying Oil and I think it is the best serum I have ever used. It is expensive at £32 for a small 125ml bottle but if you don't mind spending on hair products then this is definitely one worth trying.

Kerastase describe the product as ..."our first versatile beautifying treament enriched with a complex for four precious oils. Maize, Argan, Camellia and Pracaxi oils combine to create a luxurious Elixir for all hair types."

1. Pracaxi Oil:
Originates from Amazonian regions. Celebrated for its rich conditioning properties.

2. Argan Oil:
Deriving from Morocco, it remains one of the rarest oils in the world. It is a prized oil famed for its nourishing benefits.

3. Maize Oil:
Extracted from corn germs from Central America. A Kérastase heritage oil used in our first ever masque.

4. Camellia Oil:
A luxurious and fragrant oil, extracted from camellia flowers traditionally from Central and Eastern Asia.

The liquid is light weight and a few drops actually go a long way. Kerastase suggest the product is multi purpose and can be used pre-shampoo, pre blow-dry, after blow-dry and as part of your daily hair care routine. Personally I use it after I have blow-dried my hair to give my hair shine and to nourish the ends after running straighteners through it. It doesn't weigh your hair done, unlike other serums and finishing waxes and it has a lovely coconut based scent. I love a fragranced product and it is light enough to use.

I have used it twice since I purchased it and I love the effect it has on my tresses. I have very long hair so using a serum is vital for me to ensure that it stays in good condition. Kerastase are recognised as one of the best manufacturers of hair care products and I see why.

Christian Louboutin 8 inch heels

So one of my favourite shoe designers, Christian Louboutin recently showcased the 8 inch ballet pump heel. There is something so alluring about the red soled stillettos that makes me weak in the knees (literally). These shoes are insane! The ballet pump inspired shoe with a super-slim cigarette heel is covered in swarovski crystals. Now I can effortlessly rock a very high heel but just looking at these make my feet hurt. But thankfully these shoes are not likely to be seen on the red carpet. These were designed to raise money for the English National Ballet. “The heel makes dancers closer than any other women to the sky,” said Christian. “Closer to heaven!”

It is my birthday this month and as every year, I will be treating myself to a new pair but I think I'll stick to a much more sensible 5 inch heel :)

Morange Lipstick

I love summer time as we get influxed with bright and pretty makeup colours to try.

I recently went to Miami on holiday. I visited the Mac store whilst out there and fell in love with the orange lipstick; morange. It reminded me of the “terracotta” shade I used to wear in college by The Body Shop and I was devastated when they discontinued the shade.

The shade is summery and looks fabulous against bronzed skin. This colour is perfect for Asian skin tones. Here is a picture of me wearing it. I just can’t get enough!

Chignons & Red Lips

As a girl we all have days when we can’t be bothered to blow dry our hair. Especially in summer months when the last thing you want to do is blast your face with hot air. I had recently seen the slick back look in catwalk trend reports and I thought it looked so elegant. I had plans with my family (Nandos of all places) and I decided to try out the look. The chignon has appeared on all major runways from Oscar de la renta to Gucci. High on top of the head and styled in a slightly tousled way, the chignon creates a modern appearance which is quite easy to emulate. I love the red lip and sleek hair.

Styling chignons is easy once you get the knack of it. I sprayed my with hair protection spray by Tres Semme. I then sectioned the front of my hair and clipped it. I tied the rest of my hair into a pony tail. I wrapped my hair around the top of my head and secured the chignon using a few prong-shaped bobby pins. I then took the hair sectioned at the front and wrapped it around the bun to get a clean finish. I set the bun with hair spray (I use Elnett). To get a slightly dishevelled look, I used a tail comb to tease out some hair. This gives it a more natural look. To finish the look I applied my favourite red lipstick (I use ladybug red by Mac) and applied a small amount of lip glass (also Mac) on top for shimmer.

Essex Fashion Week 2011

Recently I was invited to attend Essex Fashion Week. As I was born and raised in Essex I was looking forward to supporting the event and meeting up with some good friends from the industry. The event was really well put together and the cast of TOWIE (The Only Way Is Essex) was there to also support the event. I took a few press pictures on the day and attach them below. The fashion show featured some exciting up and coming fashion designers. I was really impressed with the designers OOOY (www.oooy.co.uk). The concept of these designs is to creat one off pieces only. They only produce menswear range right now but keep an eye out for these guys. I predict this brother design team will go far.

I wore a dress from Asos, leather leggings from Topshop with Very prive Louboutin peep toe shoes. My jewellery is vintage from brick lane.

Getting my hair done at the salon is always a treat. The whole experience is a treat for me as I flick through a new copy of Vogue or glamour and relax as my hair stylist works her magic on my tresses.

Helping Libya - donating to the Red Cross

Hi Guys

I’m back to hopefully sprinkle some positivity and talk about some of the things dear to my heart. I like every one else has been touched by the courage of the Egyptian people and hope and pray that Libya experiences the same democratic fate. We are very lucky to live in a country where our civil rights are protected and where freedom of speech is tolerated.

I am an avid supporter of various charities but the Red Cross in particular definitely appeals to me as it is normally very quick at responding to warn-torn countries and raising donations for aid. The Red Cross arrived in Benghazi a couple of weeks ago. Truckloads of Red Cross medical supplies are due to arrive in Libya from Cairo in the next few days. Since the outbreaks of violence in Benghazi began, the Libyan Red Crescent has been responding with basic medical care and transporting injured people to hospital. It has also provided blood units to the town’s four hospitals.

Both the Egyptian and Tunisian Red Crescents are working at their countries’ borders with Libya, providing food and basic medical care to people crossing from Libya.

As a Muslim it is particularly distressing to see Muslim countries suffering at the hands of corrupt people in charge. I am reading about deliberate attacks on civilians sanctioned by their very own government officials. It is so sad to hear that people do not feel safe where they live and fear for the lives of their families.

I know we can’t save everyone and that sadly there will always be civil unrest some where in the world but we can make a small difference.

Asian Wedding Cover Shoot 2011

Hi dolls

I have been away for a few months. It's nice to be back and really touching to know that lots of girls are reading my blog.

So I recently did a new cover shoot for Asian Wedding. I was approached by the publication to be their cover girl and the team were so nice I just couldn't refuse.

I really liked the image they chose and I think the jewellery worked really well with the whole ensemble.

The exciting thing about this cover over the others I have done is that this one has it's own iphone application. You can download it and keep it up to date with all the hottest Asian service providers.

Flood Disaster Charity Gala

Like every body else, I watched the news with concern and saw the devastation caused by the floods in Pakistan. The floods have affected close to 15 million people. It is thought to be the worst flood to have hit the region for eighty years. Around a fifth of Pakistan’s land has been affected and there are shortages of food, clean water, shelter and medicine. As a British Pakistani, having been to Pakistan with my family as a young child, the images of the country in turmoil saddened me.

I decided the best way to raise money for this cause was to arrange a charity event. I contacted the guys at Voodoo Entertainment who are synonymous with event management and we agreed something needed to be done. We decided to host a Charity Gala consisting of a fashion show, musical performances, dance groups and very important auctions and raffle. I contacted Sapna caterers who very kindly offered to provide food for the night. The owners of Troxy lent us their venue, Caramel Models agreed to choreograph the fashion show for us and all the big names in entertainment, PR, Music, Print & Fashion world collaborated with us to help us set up this fundraising event. We are so fortunate to have a roof over our head, food on the table and basic necessities as heating and clean water. Sadly, the children and families in Pakistan do not have these luxuries. The floods are causing extreme poverty and starvation. Your donations on the night will help us assist DEC (www.dec.org.uk) in transporting vital medicine, food and clothing to those who are suffering.

The Flood Disaster Charity Gala is being held on Wednesday the 22nd September at Troxy in London. We need you to get your friends to book a table and come enjoy the night.

Recently my friends and I got together to open Iftari together. We ate at my friend Kaniz Ali's Dad's restaurant Achari. The restaurant donated our bill to the Flood appeal. A great way to see friends, eat and donate. All my friends know that I am a firm believer of charity. I believe it is very important to give back and help support people who are not as fortunate as us.

Kites Red Carpet London Premier

A couple of months ago, we were invited to the London premier of Kites in Leicester square.
The film starred Hrithik Roshan & Barbaro Mori. Kites' is the widest ever release for any Indian film production to date and heralds a new milestone in international filmmaking. The film is directed by Anurag Basu who was also at the premier.

Summer of Melas 2010

Mela season is finally over! For over 3 months, these melas have taken over my weekends! It was great to see old friends and meet lovely people who came to watch. I was there supporting my husband whilst he presented the main stages across the nation. I met the lovely team at the BBC Asian network who every year work so hard to put on these events. The weather was great and families came out to enjoy the festivities!

Bridal Shoot with Somiah Noreen

Hey,

I was contacted last year by a lovely make up artist, Somiah Noreen. She wanted to work with me to get some bridal images. I get many messages from make up artists wanting to do shoots. I am very fortunate that I am in the position where I can be selective about working with the best in the industry. When I read Somiah's message, something instantly drew me to her. It was her kind nature and humble personality that made me say yes. She had only recently qualified and was looking to build her portfolio. It took me four months to get a date for her but when we worked together, it was fantastic.

I generally avoid bridal shoots as I have done so many but working on this shoot was a pleasure. She was just as lovely in person. Bashir Sabar did my hair. He's like my little brother and working with him never feels like work. Jayesh, the photographer was so easy to work with. I loved his lighting composition and attention to detail. Technically he is fantastic at what he does.

My Asian Wedding Magazine - Front Cover

Hi Guys

I was recently contacted by My Asian Wedding Magazine. They asked me to do the cover shoot for their Summer issue 2010. It was a great experience working with the team who were brilliant to work with. The makeup was done by Maz from Zens Bridal. I have worked with her on previous advertising campaigns and she is a joy to work with. She is a creative make-up artist and also great with hair. We chose 3 looks for the shoot. The photography was done by Alex Styles. He was great to work with and made everyone feel comfortable on set.
The editor chose the image with the white jewelled headpiece and necklace. Maz teamed the look with loose curls and a smoky eye look. I just saw the tear sheet for the cover. The magazine goes on worldwide distribution in July.
My Asian Wedding Magazine is available in the UK, Europe & Canada. It will also be distributed in Dubai and UAE later this year.

I’d like to say a huge thank you to the team at MAWM and everyone who loved the cover.

1. What interested you in fashion?
I have always loved fashion. I used to dress up as a little girl in my Mum’s clothes and put on fashion shows with my sisters. Fashion is a big part of my life. I am obsessed with catwalk trends and like to incorporate key looks into my own signature style.

2. What got you into modelling?
I was 15 when I was spotted by a Make-up artist on Green St in East London. She asked me if I was interested in modelling and being her Model for a shoot. I was revising for my GCSE exams at the time, studied all night and then went to the shoot the next day. It turned out to be a bridal shoot for Asian Woman Magazine! I did the shoot. I kept getting booked and re-booked by other designers and clients and haven’t looked back since.

3. I understand you also do some presenting? Describe some of these experiences.
I have been Modelling for over 10 years. I had done global TV commercials, graced many front covers, high fashion photo shoots abroad and walked the runway in fashion shows. I needed a challenge and a new direction. Fortunately an offer to present my own show was given to me, I was delighted. I am a perfectionist and I wanted to be qualified to do the job. I studied TV Presenting at London Film School and was mentored by British TV Presenter Sally Gray. Here I learnt many skills about TV and I think they helped me a lot in projecting myself. I then signed a four-year contract with Brit Asia TV to host my own weekly show. I have filmed two successful series of my show, The Chart Show. I have interviewed great artists as Gurdas Maan, Jassi Sidhu, Jazz Dhami, Imran Khan and Juggy D to name a few.

4. What do you love more, presenting or modelling, and why?
Without sounding cliché, I love both. Modelling is very glamorous and I’ve travelled a lot because of it. I was flown out to St Tropez for a fashion shoot for a glossy and I’ve been fortunate to work with the best make up artists and photographers in the country. Modelling will always be my first love. However with presenting, I’m really enjoying myself. I’m confident in front of the camera and I like the adrenalin rush of filming live. With Modelling, you’re told what to wear and you’re promoting a product or beauty service. In contrast, presenting is about me. I’m styling myself and it’s more personal. I got a lot of emails from young girls after my show aired wanting advice. I guess they felt connected to me in some way which is very flattering.

5. What degree did you attain in University (if any)? Did you always want to model?
Education is highly important in my family. I come from a family of doctors, bankers and solicitors. I attained straight A’s in my GCSE’s and in all 3 of my A-Levels. I studies BSC Investment, Finance & Risk with Mathematics at CASS Business School. I achieved a 2:1 and graduated at 20 years old. My plan was to always work in Banking like my Dad. After I graduated I worked at Deutsche Bank and then moved onto JP Morgan as a Senior Analyst. Modelling has always been a part-time job but as it got busier, I eventually had to leave and pursue my Media career full time.

6. How does it feel to be one of the most attractive Asian women in the world?
It is so flattering and I am honoured to be seen as one of the most attractive Asian women in the world. It is humbling and I feel blessed for what God has given me. I have a strong family who support me and keep my grounded. It does overwhelm me sometimes with the amount of support people have shown me. I get a lot of emails and messages from young girls who tell me they look up to me. I try to remember that in every assignment I do.

7. What do you enjoy more, fashion shows or photo shoots?
Fashion shows are great fun because of the banter back stage. I have walked the ramp for many top fashion shows. My first catwalk experience was for Bibi Russell in London Fashion Week. Since then I have done Zee Carnival at London Olympia, Asian Bride Shows at Cafe Royal and opened the Asiana Bridal Show at the RiverBank Plaza.
Photo Shoots are more relaxed and I am pampered. My tea is brought to me, we have more time on hair and make-up and everyone has a laugh!

8. Who are you favourite stylists/photographers/makeup artists?
It would be unfair to pick as I have been fortunate to work with many talented people. No two photographers or Make-up artists are the same. I am friends with many of them so picking one would get me into a lot of trouble.

9. Who is your role model and why?
In terms of Modelling Cindy Crawford is amazing and she still looks great at 40. She is also a clever business woman and has used her fame in projects that are important to her. She’s an inspiration. Personally however, Queen Rania is someone I am in awe of. She is beautiful, compassionate and an unbelievable philanthropist. I would like to dedicate more of my time to charity work. I think it is important to use your fame and status for a good cause. I will definitely get involved with more charity projects.

10. What are some upcoming projects?
I am the face of a clothing company called Desi Rags (www.desirags.co.uk). They produce top quality T-shirts aimed at the young British Asian Market. I have shot two major campaigns for them. They are planning to distribute globally and I look forward to shooting more campaigns for them.
I am also resuming filming for my TV show. After the huge response from the first two series, my production team are working very hard to keep my show fresh.
I am endorsing a new clothing catalogue called Cuckoo Fashion. They produce quality salwaar kameez, sarees and hijabs. The catalogue is seasonal and the first catalogue was released in January this year. I am also the face of Claim Today Solicitors, the same firm endorsed by Shah Rukh Khan. I have a contract with them to film new adverts until 2012.

One project I am very excited about is charity one raising money for orphaned children. I can’t talk too much about it but I’m meeting with my design team this week. Fingers crossed.

11. When do you feel your success catapulted?
I am such a workaholic that I rarely get a chance to sit back and reflect. I think making the Top 50 Most Beautiful Asian Women List in the Times of India this year was when it hit me. As the only UK Asian Model on the list alongside Bollywood beauties as Bipasha, Katrina and Aishwariya Rai was an eye opener. I can retire now. Hahahah.

12. What advice can you give to aspiring models?
My first piece of advice would be to get your family’s support. My dad was very reluctant to let me pursue Modelling as I was academically bright and it’s not a desirable career choice. I assured my family that I would continue my education and never do anything that would compromise my beliefs. I am very selective about the work I do. I approve the clothes first and don’t wear anything revealing.
Secondly, Modelling is a business so treat it like one. Do not work for free and get contracts in place before committing to a shoot. Check credentials of the clients booking you.

13. What is your background, Pakistani, Indian...?
I am a British Pakistani.

14. Where do you love to shop?
I love Topshop. You can always find something there.

15. What is your must-have (purses, shoes, makeup...)?
That’s obvious, shoes. I have over 400 heels and it’s a growing addiction. Shoes can make or break your outfit. When I was presenting my own show on TV, I got a lot of messages from girls asking where I got my shoes from.

16. Who is your favourite designer?
I like to keep on top of British designers, Stella McCartney is an inspirational designer and always designs girlie ensembles. Her pieces are timeless and work with almost everything in my wardrobe. Her daywear collections are reflective of my own personal style.
A personal favourite is designer Zuhair Murad. I actually messaged him after seeing his “Winter Rhapsody” collection for 2010 and he replied. He gets the embellishments on his dresses just perfect. His outfits are perfection. If I ever get invited to the Oscars, he is designing for me! InshAllah.

Front Cover - Cuckoo Fashion Magazine

Hey,

I have made the front cover of Cuckoo Fashion Magazine. Cuckoo is a fashion retailer selling outfits as sarees, salwar suits, hijabs and accessories. I shot their spring collection over a three day shoot in Islington. It was a great shoot with a lovely relaxed team. Cuckoo is a family-run business and this was apparent at the shoot. It was a close knit team and the photographer Pete was amazing. I've shot catalogues before. They are rushed and high pressured as we have to get through as much of the stock as possible. Catalogue shoots differ from high fashion photo shoots, as you literally have 30 seconds per shot and you have to get the money shot quickly.

Happy New Year! Hope you all had a fab 2009. Let's hope 2010 brings us all success and prosperity this year as well.

2010 saw the release of my new photo shoot. The shoot was for Vault Clothing designer Laura Jones. Her pieces were very interesting and I particularly liked her coats and suit jackets.

Hair was done by Yvette Shah (from Asif Yvette Hair) She did my hair fabulously. She created avante-garde styles for this fashion shoot which complimented the make-up and outfits really well.

Make-up was done by Kaniz Ali. I have worked with her many times and her make-up just gets better and better. She enjoys doing fashion make-up and it shows.

World's Top 50 Asian Women List 2009

Hello All

I just wanted to wish you all a lovely Xmas and a Happy New Year with your families. I wanted to thank you for your support over the years. It's been a great year for me professionally with all the exciting photo shoots, magazine covers, commercials and catwalk shows I have been fortunate to be selected for.

We completed two successful series of my TV show, The Chart Show on Brit Asia as well. My youtube page has garnered a lot of attention abroad from international followers wanting to watch my interviews with guests such as Gurdas Maan, Jazz Dhami, Imran Khan, Juggy D and so forth.

I want to thank my make-up artists, photographers, assistants, camera crew and runners all of whom without my job would be very hard.

I also want to share some news with you I got this week. Eastern Eye Newspaper compiled their annual list of the WORLD'S TOP 50 SEXIEST ASIAN WOMEN 2009. I have made my debut at No. 35.

The "Times of India" reviewed the same list and have published photos and biogs on each of the women.

As the only UK Asian Model on the list, I consider this an honour. Sharing my name in the list with Bollywood beauties such as Bipasha Basu, Aishwariya Rai, Katrina Kaif & Deepika Padukone is flattering.

I was called by the director of Desi Rags last week and he informed of an exciting collaboration with bhangra producer Panjabi By Nature. After the success of the summer campaign I modelled and Menis' "Kool 2 B Asian" range, PBN is another music name who has joined the DesiRags team.
They asked me to model the ladies T-shirts whilst Heps himself modelled the men's range. We shot in a studio in Birmingham and it was great fun. I have met Heps before as I interviewed him on my show, The Chart Show. He is a lovely guy and very easy to get on with. Guv from Desi Rags also came down to oversee the shoot. Graham, my photographer was a joy to work with. He's photographed pop singer Jamelia so I knew I was in safe hands!

As the face of the company, I can verify the top quality of the tees. Desi Rags is an exciting label to model for as they like me, believe in promoting British Asian culture. Music and fashion go hand in hand and this is testament to the success Desi Rags are now enjoying!

Glam Rock Garden Shoot

A couple of weeks ago, I collobarated with a team of people to do an outdoor shoot. We wanted an autumn themed shoot against a beautiful back drop. We decided to shoot in Colchester, Essex, on a farm. The backdrop was gorgeous and it was surrounded by 28 acres of land filled with trees and lakes. I brought in my trusted team that had previously hired me for shoots. The make-up was done by current magazine Beauty editor Kaniz ali, Hair done by Bashir Sabar, photography by Hena Shaikh and my lovely assistants who helped with the props. We had a video production team come down to film a behind the scenes video as well. Ray Khan from WE.ARE.ALIVE films organised the direction and production of the video.

I wanted complete creative control over the styling and sourced the wardrobe myself. As a model, I am often told what I'm wearing but as I arranged this shoot I wanted the clothes to reflect my personal style. As a keen fashion aficianado, I was inspired by the Fall Rock Chick collection a lot of designers were mirroring and bought a mixture of black high street and vintage pieces to complete the styling. One of the favourite ensembles is the sweetheart neckline dress and a leather biker jacket from All Saints. I also loved the black slash neck sequinze Topshop dress which I teamed with high shine leggings.

This has to be the most fun I have ever had on a shoot. I'm an outdoor person so climbing through trees (in heels) and walking into dried up lakes was great fun (!) The team was great and we all had such a brilliant time. The weather was lovely and the sun was shining all afternoon. We filmed til dusk. We managed to complete 7 outfit changes which was a result.

Fanfair Magazine

In September, I was approached by a new magazine called Fanfair. Fanfair Magazine already includes adverts for designers as Nicole Farhi. They have covered international catwalk collections. They wanted to hire me to model their jewellery shoot. I turned up at their studios in East London and we got to work straight away. We did 5 looks. Two traditional and three high fashion.

The team was great. I already knew Kaniz, the make-up artist as we have flown abroad together for a fashion shoot for Asian Woman Magazine. The hair stylist Bash, is an up and coming name in the industry. I have worked with him twice after this shoot after seeing him in action on this shoot. Hena Shaikh is the magazine photographer and a lovely spirit to have on set. We had so much fun on this shoot. I just received the images yesterday. The magazine has gone to print already and they're planning a launch party this month.

The Chart Show - Menis, Kidd Skilly & D-boy

Hi Guys
We have now wrapped the second series of The Chart Show. I can't believe we've filmed 24 shows already. The show has come a long way from when we first started filming in January. The huge success of the show has warranted another series. I'm considering taking a break for a month or so before I throw my schedule into chaos again!

The second series had Menis, Kidd Skilly and D-boy. We filmed all 3 on the same day.

Menis is great and I arranged for him to come onto the show. He's fresh and different. His "Kool 2 B Asian" video struck a chord with me. He's flying the flag for the young British Asian crowd and I loved that.

Kidd Skilly flew in the night before and I wasn't too sure what to expect. As soon as we started filming, I was blown away. He was so charismatic and at ease in front of the camera, we hit it off straight away. He's working with some big names out in the States so I look forward to hearing more from him in the UK.

D-boy is the producer behind tracks like Sef's "U need a hero", "Tu bataja" feat Des-c and "Jiska Husna". I love his production work and definitely think he's a producer to watch. Interviewing D was like catching up with a mate.

All my guests on both series have been phenomenal. The viewers have been so kind and loyal and I hope not to disappoint them.

Judging the AW Miss England Pageant

I was contacted by Asian Woman Magazine in May to be a judge for their Miss England runway Beauty Contest. It was an honour to be asked to be a judge. Having worked in the industry for over 10 years and worked with the best photographers, designers and make-up artists I felt that I could do this.

This pageant was particularly important as it was for Asian contestants through the magazine and the winner we selected would automaticall be entered into the Miss England contest.

There were 10 models and all of them were glamorous and composed. On the judges panel alongside me, was Jen the Fashion editor of the magazine, Alpa pattni, a former model and TV presenter and Jenna, last year's AW runway winner. We all collectively decided the winner Reema. She was tall, elegant and the most intelligent.

The event was a success and I had a great time judging the contest. Below are some pics from the magazine and courtesy of Voodoo entertainment.

Earlier this year, I was approached by Desirags to model their summer range of new T shirts. They asked me to be the face of their company. I met up with Guv, who runs the site. His family come from a textiles business and he brought some samples for me to see. The quality of the tees was fab and I loved the Asian inspired logos and icons. I agreed to shoot their campaign which we did in March. The photos were released in July and the response has been brilliant. I have my own tees and I love them!

Here's another update on my show. Just when I thought we couldn't get any better artists on the show, I get a call from my research team at Brit Asia tellimg me that Khiza, Navin Kundra, Zeekay and Imran Khan want to come on the show.

I was excited to interview Khiza as although we had spoken before on numerous occasions for other work, we never met. It was lovely to meet him and to date, he was the easiest to interiew. He was so comfortable in front of the camera and could talk for England, which makes my job so much easier!

Navin was great too. His voice is so velvety and he performed the most on my show. He is a natural talent and I predict he'll go very far!

ZeeKay was so sweet. He's so young yet very professional. He also has a great voice and I think the best quality about him was that he sees music as his career and is working very hard.

Imran Khan came to the studios and there was hysteria. News leaked that he was coming and some girls turned up waiting to catch a glimpse. I was told that he didn't talk much and was quiet. I sat down with him for 30mins before filming and I found him funny and sweet. As English isn't his first language, I think people assume he's quiet. He is in fact very friendly and exceptionally humble. Despite only releasing 2 singles to date, his fan base is incredible!

The Chart Show Brit Asia TV - Second Series

Hello Peoples

We are now on the second series of The Chart Show. We completed 15 episodes already and have already begun filming for the second.

After the success of the first series, many artists are calling up and wanting to come on and have a chat. I have so far had the pleasure to interview Jazz Virk, Bonafide, Dalvinder Singh, rapper Shizzio and Jaz Dhami.

I try and get as many messages and shout outs I can in the show. I read all of my messages and want to include every single one of them.

My producer has told me that The Chart Show is the most popular show on the channel and has a solid fan base. This is all down to the fabulous guests I have and the production team involved. From my researchers, cameraman, lights assistants and producers, every one puts in 100%. This motivates me to work harder and produce entertaining shows.

Jaz is a wonderful humble man and he was very genuine. I think his debut album is going to do very well. The Bonafide guys were soo funny that I forgot we were working. They both are so ambitious! Rapper Shizzio is working really hard in the studio and has some huge projects overseas.

I firmly believe we need to support British Asian talent! Show the love and buy their albums!

Hi Guys...

I completed the first series in May. We had a huge response from viewers and the support has been fantastic! We've been lucky to get some brilliant artists wanting to come on the show. All my guests have been brilliant to interview which makes my job easier!

The first series included exclusive interviews with:

Asiana Bridal Show 2009

Hi Guys!
I opened the Asiana Bridal Show this year in London and Birmingham. The show was a complete success and everyone worked very hard. From Caramel Model choreographers, hair and make-u, the dancers, the models and the whole backstage production team. I feel truly blessed to work with aspirational people who work so hard for a cracking show!
I was also very fortunate to meet some lovely people who came backstage to meet me, take pictures and just have a chat. I was tagged in laods of pics from the show.

Kyles Jewellers Bridal Campaign

I recently shot the bridal advertising campaign for Kyles Jewellers. I did 4 shots and they appeared in Asiana Wedding Magazine Summer 2009. Jawaad did my make-up and Alex Pichon took the pictures. I don't usually enjoy bridal shots as I have done so many, but the jewellery was gorgeous and the outfits were amazing as well.

During this shoot at Asiana magazine studios, I was also interviewed by the BBC as part of a documentary on Asian Models. Directed by Kevin Jarvis.

Louis Mariette - Celebrity Hat Designer (BNTM)

I love America's Next Top Model. As a model, I am thrilled to see a show that showcases how hard it is to be a professional model. I love the challenges and creative photoshoots. I am now avidly following Britain's Next Top Model and was delighted to hear that Louis Mariette is a judge on the show. Louis is a celebrity hat designer, based in Sloane Square London. I have had the honour of meeting him and modelling his hats for an Asiana Magazine fashion spread. He was a lovely guy whose creativity and passion for designing was incredible. Here are a few behind-the-scenes snaps from the shoot I did for him.

10. Mariah Carey – Honey. She is an amazing singer but this video catapulted her into an icon. I adore the secret agent role she plays and the acting in the beginning. This video was fresh for its time and I remember being glued to the screen in my school uniform watching it on the box

9. Jags Climax - Heer. This video came out over two years ago. It was shot in Thailand and I think the concept is fresh. He raised the bar with this release. I like the switch from colour to black and white in the video. Jags is a great producer and his tracks always get me and my friends onto the dancefloor.

8. Jinx – Akhiyan Udeek Diya. This was the first time I felt UK Asian talent was showcased in a video in a non-sleazy way. The boys and girls free styling in the video and the Jinx boys mixing their track. There’s a feel good vibe to the video. The vocals are a classic but it’s the production of the song along with the break dancing in the video which give it the urban feel.

7. Miss Scandalous – Hai Hai. She’s an Asian girl so I have to show my support. I think she’s very talented and this video is simple yet effective. It still feels very “street” which is what I like about it. We definitely need more British Asian female solo singers in the industry.

6. Omkara – Beedi (bollywood). I think Bipasha is the hottest Bollywood actress and this video is a classic. It is so simple, no big budget dancers or complicated choreography yet whenever this comes on, I’m transfixed!

5. Punjabi By Nature feat Miss Pooja – Aashiq. Brilliant song and fresh video. Although it was shot in the UK, there is a desi vibe to the video. Miss Pooja looks good and everyone looks like they’re having a brilliant time on set. I have interviewed PBN on my tv show and he is nice guy as well!

4. Kanye West – Goldigger. I love love love the 50’s pin up styling on the girls. Hype Williams has directed some of the best videos in hip-hop. Jamie Foxx and Kanye perform well in the video but moreover it was the styling of the girls that makes this one of my favourite videos.

3. George Michael – Freedom. I remember watching this video as a little girl and just loving the supermodels
looking so elegant and refined. Cindy Crawford, Naomi, Linda Evangelista and Christy Turlington. The song and video are both classics.

2. Sukshinder Shinda – Ghum Sum Ghum Sum– Its in the charts right now and I just love the opulence of the video. The giant mansion, the details in the house and the performance by both actors are very good. Shinda is a legend and most of his videos are usually of a high standard.

1. Michael Jackson – Remember the Time. In light of MJ announcing his tour dates in the UK, his videos are being played all the time. This one is my favourite MJ video. I think Iman is an amazing supermodel and her portrayal as Egyptian queen Neffertiti is spot on. I like the concept of the video and I’m a fan of Eddie Murphy too. I have a soft spot for funny men!

The Chart Show - Brit Asia TV.. April

Hello Peoples

I just wanted to give you guys an update on how The Chart Show is doing. The response has been fantastic and I think I now have regular viewers who tune in every Friday night and give me feedback on my facebook. Since the first blog about this, I have had the honour to interview some great artists. The legendary Gurdas Maan gave me an exclusive interview which was absolutely awesome! It was completely last minute as my Producer managed to secure the exclusive. I travelled from London to Birmingham on the Thursday at the Birmingham Museum and Arts Gallery. We filmed and edited the show to air on the next day, Friday night. He was there to attend a press conference promoting his upcoming projects. We were told by his agents that we could not have longer than 10 mins but he enjoyed himself and we extended another 5 mins with him. I had to do the whole interview in Punjabi which was scary but thankfully (!) the response from everyone has been brilliant. My mum was so proud :)

Other artists I have interviewed since my first blog are XS Bass, Juggy D and Bee 2. Juggy is a very funny guy so the interview was really fun. My facebook went crazy after his interview, mostly from his girl fans!! I have partied with Juggy before and he really is so much fun. I have been to Soundpipe records several times now and got to know Taj-E and Bee 2 really well. They're both working really hard on their album Sik n Twisted and I hope good things for them.
We have a good line up of guests coming up on the show so I hope I am able to maintain the standard and keep the viewers entertained!!

Gulzaeb joins Brit Asia TV's chart show

Gulzaeb Beg Ali has been hired as the face of Brit Asia TV's newly launched music countdown programme, simply called '"The Chart Show'.

Ali, who has previously modelled for various magazines and on the catwalk, started her TV stint last week.

Speaking to BizAsia.co.uk, Ali expressed her joy in hosting the new show, "I am very excited to be presenting The Chart Show on Brit Asia TV. I am proud to be a part of the channel as I feel it's the only channel providing a platform for British Asian music talent. My program is a weekly show and plays all the top songs and videos of the week voted by the viewers. I also interview a high profile guest on the show every week. The response has been amazing as I think there was a real demand for a show like this. I like to think I am bringing something fresh and different to the show and hopefully the show will continue to attract to young, savvy and British Asians."

Channel producer, Lakhy Sira added, "Gulzaeb has been incredible on the show. She looks great; there is an aura about her that makes you glued to the screen. She is a unique presenter; I would not like to compare her with anyone else, as she has her own natural style. I am pleased that I am working with such a fantastic camera talent."
Incidently, Gulzaeb's husband Murtz Ali is known for his TV work on ZEE Muzic and now on the BBC Asian Network. They have been married for nearly two years.

In February, I was poached by Brit Asia TV to present my own weekly TV Show. After some consideration, I agreed. Although I have trained in TV presenting at the London Academy of film and TV, modelling has always been my first love and I was worried the show would take up a lot of time.

I am glad I decided to present my own show as the response has been great. Brit Asia TV is a great channel to be a part of. Brit Asia TV is the ONLY channel in the UK which provides a platform for UK Asian music artists to showcase their work. I love the channel as it is run by professionals and is of high quality. The videos are brand new and the channel is regularly updated with new material, which is fabulous for the industry. I think it's very important to show support to UK Asian music artists. There is some amazing talent there!

Fortunately a lot of people already know me as a model so the transition into TV presenting has been easier. The support has been overwhelming and humbling. I have so far interviewed Jassi Sidhu, Gurcharan Mall, Jus Ritz, Taj-E, Moneyspinner and Punjabi by Nature. We have some brilliant artists lined up as which I am really excited about.

I love performing in catwalk shows. The adrenalin backstage is electric. I enjoy photo shoots but there's something so theatrical about catwalk shows that gets me really excited. During my studies I took a break from modelling for 3 years. I made my come back at London Fashion Week in 2006 for acclamied designer Bibi Russell.

Since then, I have walked the ramp for major shows such as the Asian Bride Show at Cafe Royal, Zee Canival at London Olympia and Asian Woman Achievement Awards at Whitehall.

I also get to meet some really sweet people during these shows and the audiences are always amazing!

I'm looking forward to the bridal shows in Birmingham in January/February as I always meet lovely people there.

Men want to date them, many women want to look like them and major companies use them to sell everything from fashion to expensive brands. Bold, beautiful and larger than life, models appear on billboards and television, in fashion magazines and strut their stuff on catwalks. They wear fabulous clothes, get loads of attention and make good money. But is it as glamorous as it seems?

Gulzaeb Beg Ali is a rising star in the British Fashion Scene. Eastern Eye speaks to her about modelling, fashion and secret beauty tips…

Why did you decide to become a model?
I never planned to be a model and I never expected my career to be as successful as it has been. I was in Sixth-form when I was spotted by a well known make-up artist. She approached me to model for Asian Woman Magazine for her beauty profile. I did the shoot and haven’t looked back since. I got re-booked by clients and new designers asked me to appear in their ads. I love my job, the traveling and meeting new people.

What’s the biggest challenge of making it as a model?
Well, trying to fight stereotypes, for one! Modelling isn’t as easy as many people assume. Intelligence is a virtue. Any pretty girl can put on an outfit but selling it in front of a camera is whole different ball game. A model has to be comfortable with her body and go to any lengths for a good shot. I have climbed up high buildings, stood in the rain and shot in dark warehouses for great shots.

Do you prefer walking the ramp or doing photo-shoots?
I love doing both. There is however, a real rush of adrenaline being on the catwalk. I just fire up on the runway. I love performing and fashion shows take me into my element. I love the pressure of changing outfits in 40 seconds. I have done shows with up to 13 changes!
Photo shoots take longer and are hard work, especially if they are on location. It’s a lot of waiting around for lights, make-up et al. I have done some very creative concept shoots and they have been most fun.

Gulzaeb, where do you stand on the size zero debate?
I think it’s very disturbing. There’s absolutely nothing attractive about being just bones. I think psychologically there must be something wrong with girls who will do anything to look skeletal. Men love curvaceous, toned bodies, not rib cages. I love my figure. I have never succumbed to the size-zero circus and am still taking bookings today. I would much rather be a healthy role model.

What do you do to stay in shape?
My modeling career requires me to keep fit. I get called out for jobs with 12 hours’ notice, so I have to maintain my figure all the time. I go to the gym and do a mixture of cardio vascular and resistance training. I also watch my diet and detox running up to a fashion show. I also go out with my husband and hit the floor – I find it’s a great way to burn calories while having a blast!

Which is your favourite fashion label?
Oh, I can’t pick one. I’m a fashion junkie. I love Roberto Cavalli, Lanvin, Stella and Topshop for essentials. I think Cavalli in particular, designs glamorous dresses and his cuts are always flattering. My signature style comprises of nice fitted dresses and killer heels. I love old school glamour and will always pick a pretty dress over jeans.

What is you favourite fashion accessory?
One word, shoes. I will always have a good pair of shoes on. I own more than 400 pairs and I’m still feeding my uncontrollable addiction. At home, I have a shoe room. Shoes can completely transform an outfit.

What kind of make-up do you like?
I love the natural bronzed look for when I’m not working – tinted moisturizer and lip balm. For going out, I like Bridgette Bardot’s kittenish eye-liner and glossy lips.

Give us your secret beauty tip?
I always remove all my make-up before going to sleep. I cleanse, tone and moisturize every night without fail. I exfoliate once a week and drink lots of water. I also look after my hair with regular cuts and conditioning treatments. I get regular pedicures too.

Finally, what makes a good model?
A good model has to have the right attitude and be a nice person. No matter how beautiful you are if you are not pleasant to have around, client won’t re-book you. A good model is versatile and has a look that can be both commercial and edgy. She has to be photogenic and confident, both in front of the camera or on a catwalk with hundreds of people looking at her.

Canvas Couture Shoot

I always enjoy doing concept shoots as they allow me to model in a more expressive way. I love dressing up and being creative for a photo shoot.

The Canvas Couture shoot was created for make-up artist Maz in Birmingham. She contacted me for a shoot and I was very impressed with her work. She is a true professional and moreover knows how to do make-up well. The concept for this was inspired by an old Galiano shoot. The shoot involved multiple models covered in paint. We amended the concept by including alternative fashion. The clothes were designed, made and styled by Rusana Rahman. She made all the outfits out of recycable materials such as polystyrene, sugar paper, cardboard etc. The wardrobe consisted of bustieres, bubble hemmed skirts and corsets. Fusian Magazine Cover Shoot

I was asked this year to be the cover girl for a new and exciting magazine called FUSIAN. After emails and phone calls back and forth, I agreed. I travelled up to Birmingham to shoot for the launch issue. I was delighted to meet a young, sweet and hard working team. This magazine is a first of it's kind. It really concentrates on content and aspires to give British Asian readers something more than pretty adverts. I wish them all the best and hope to see regular quality publications.

I recently signed a 4 year contract to front a series of national adverts for a Solicitors Firm. This company invests heavily in it's advertising and marketing merchandise. I have filmed 6 adverts in English, Urdu and Punjabi. These will be airing throughout 2009.
